United Learning Centre: A musical gem in St Ann

United Learning Centre Preparatory School, established in September 1994 in the hills of Upton, St Ann, stands as a testament to educational distinction.

Boasting a student body comprising 168 individuals and a dedicated staff of 22 members, including educators, administrators, and support personnel, the institution exemplifies academic excellence.

Consistently ranked among the top educational establishments at the primary level in St. Ann, United Learning Centre Preparatory School has witnessed its students’ remarkable achievements. Notably, the school’s scholars have secured prestigious government scholarships and achieved an outstanding 98 per cent pass rate in the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) Examinations for both 2022 and 2023.

In addition to academic prowess, the school prides itself on offering a diverse range of extracurricular activities, including music, karate, dance, football, and track and field. The music department, under the leadership of Mark Brown, has garnered widespread acclaim for its contributions to the cultural landscape of St. Ann.

Since 2011, United Learning Centre Preparatory School has actively participated in Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) music competitions, consistently progressing to the parish finals.

Noteworthy triumphs include clinching victory at the parish finals in 2016 and securing the trophy for Class 3 in Jamaica Pop & Modern Reggae Vocal Ensemble at the national finals. The school’s musical achievements continued to soar in subsequent years, with multiple wins at both parish and national levels.

In 2019, the school’s musical talents garnered national recognition, earning accolades across various categories. The trend of success persisted into 2023 and culminated in a remarkable feat in 2024, with United Learning Centre Preparatory School securing three gold medals at the JCDC parish finals.

The school also triumphed at the national finals, claiming trophies for Class 3 Best Steel Pan Ensemble and Class 3 Best Classroom Instrumental, further enhancing the reputation of St Ann as a hub of musical talent.

The school’s gifted drummers are poised to mesmerise audiences at Emancipation Park on May 3, showcasing their exceptional talent and contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of Jamaica.
