The Universal Service Fund (USF) partnered with Hekaya Media Communication to launch the inaugural digital storytelling workshop designed specifically for the deaf community.
The training, “Silent Voices, Visual Storytelling: A Digital Storytelling Workshop for the Deaf”, took place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at The Summit in St Andrew. Several students from the Caribbean Christian Centre participated and gained valuable skills in creating their narratives through digital media.
Aimed at promoting self-expression, inclusion, and empowerment, the workshop offered participants hands-on training in digital content creation, including video editing and storytelling techniques, ensuring they can effectively share their stories in a digital-first world. By utilising innovative technology and accessible tools, this initiative should bridge the digital divide and amplify the voices of the deaf community.

According to Charlton Mcfarlane, chief executive officer at the USF, “The Universal Service Fund remains committed to providing equal opportunities for all through technology.”
He added, “This collaboration with Hekaya Media Communication underscores our dedication to digital inclusion, ensuring that deaf individuals have the resources and training necessary to tell their own stories and engage meaningfully in the digital space.”

The facilitators for the workshop include Dahlia Harris, radio and television broadcaster and founder of DMH Productions, and Carlyle Grant, managing director for Digital Danes.
Hekaya Media is known for its expertise in digital storytelling for diverse audiences. lt brought a wealth of knowledge to the workshop, guiding participants in crafting compelling visual narratives that reflect their experiences and perspectives.

“We believe in the power of storytelling to create connections and drive change,” said Kayon Vaz, founder of Hekaya Media Communication.
“By providing deaf individuals with the tools and techniques to express themselves digitally, we are fostering a more inclusive and diverse media landscape.”

The Digital Storytelling Workshop initiative aligns with the broader mission of USF and Hekaya Media as both use technology and media to create social impact and improve accessibility.
