The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Office for the Caribbean, in partnership with the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC), an agency of the Ministry of Education Skills, Youth and Information (MoESYI) will host two transformative AI in Education Workshops to empower teachers across Jamaica to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their classrooms.
The workshops, scheduled for 10 and 17 October 2025 in Montego Bay and Kingston, respectively, will bring together 400 teachers, school leaders, and other education stakeholders to explore how AI can transform their classrooms and school ecosystem.
These workshops come at a pivotal time, as AI is reshaping the world of education. By equipping Jamaica’s teachers with the skills, tools, and frameworks to navigate this new landscape, the authorities are not only preparing classrooms for the future but also enhancing teacher engagement by reducing administrative burdens and creating more space for creativity, collaboration, and meaningful interaction with students.
Guided by the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers—a globally recognised standard for integrating AI in education—the training will equip teachers to apply AI in ways that improve learning outcomes while ensuring responsible and ethical use.
Teachers will have the opportunity to:
- Explore the fundamentals of AI and its relevance to the Jamaican education system.
- Examine key ethical considerations, including data privacy, equity, and academic integrity.
- Experiment with AI tools that can improve lesson delivery, student assessment, and classroom engagement.
- Develop personalised action plans for integrating AI in their schools over the next 3 months.
- Connect with peers to share ideas, strategies, and best practices.
The initiative is part of the national Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Joint Programme on Digital Transformation for Education in Jamaica, funded by the European Union and Spain. The AI in Education Workshops reflect UNESCO’s commitment to supporting Jamaica’s National Digital Transformation Agenda and the MoESYI’s efforts to ensure that teachers are at the heart of innovation in learning.
