The US Southern Command has confirmed it is conducting flight operations in Guyana, in collaboration with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

An update from the US Embassy in Guyana stated, “this exercise builds upon routine engagement and operations to enhance security partnership between the United States and Guyana, and to strengthen regional cooperation.”

This exercise coincides with heightened tensions between and Guyana and Venezuela, following moves by the Nicolas Maduro regime to take control of the vast Essequibo region which is part of Guyana’s territory.

The flight operations exercise and continued collaboration between the GDF and US military will further signal the support by Washington for Guyana’s sovereignty.

In addition to this exercise, USSOUTHCOM will continue its collaboration with the GDF in the areas of disaster preparedness, aerial and maritime security, and countering transnational criminal organisations.

“The US will continue its commitment as Guyana’s trusted security partner and promoting regional cooperation and interoperability,” a statement from the US Embassy in Guyana read.
