The University of Technology (UTech) and the UTech’s Students’ Union (USU) have reached an agreement on tuition fees for the 2024–2025 academic year.
After initially proposing a 5 percent increase, the university has settled on a 3 per cent increase following negotiations with the USU.
The decision comes after two days of discussions, which took place on August 16 at UTech’s Papine Campus. The university cited a reduction in government funding as the primary reason for the increase.
“Following initial conversations, the USU relayed the alternatives to the general student body during a virtual town hall on Thursday, August 15. During that forum, students from across all eight faculties and colleges at UTech, submitted their feedback on the matter. This feedback from the wider student body was presented to the university’s management on Friday, August 16, following which the teams arrived at an amicable agreement regarding tuition,” UTech said in a statement.
The institution added that it is committed to pooling their efforts in lobbying the government about funding in light of the significant $1 billion cut in subvention to the university for this fiscal year.
