UTech student Truston Grizzle, a dedicated law student at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), has made his mark on the global stage, achieving second place in the public speaking competition at the prestigious World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) 2025.
This remarkable feat underscores his exceptional talent and commitment to excellence. Competing against 13 finalists from some of the world’s most renowned institutions, including Ivy League universities, Grizzle emerged as a standout contender.
WUDC, held in Panama City, Panama from December 27, 2024, to January 4, 2025, brought together the brightest minds from over 200 universities across the globe, fostering a spirit of intellectual engagement and cultural exchange.
In round one, he delivered a performance that was met by rounds of applause, laughter and cheer,
as he spoke to the tendency of humans to judge others based on the quality or state of their shoes;
whether dirty, torn, or in an otherwise deplorable condition.
Grizzle’s topic for the second round of public speaking; an impromptu speech, was “Everything is
Awesome.” He delivered a moving presentation that wowed both judges and the audience. These
acts resulted in him being selected from scores of competitors to advance to the finals of the
competition.
At the grand finals on January 3 at Hotel El Panamá, all contestants spoke on the topic, “Earth
is on trial in the first-ever interplanetary court. You will act as either the defence attorney or the
prosecutor, making your case to the jury on why Earth and humanity should be spared or
condemned.”
In what was his first-ever international competition, Grizzle demonstrated remarkable poise and
eloquence, captivating the judges and audience alike with his compelling arguments and confident
delivery. His ability to hold his own against seasoned competitors from globally celebrated
universities speaks volumes about his talent and the quality of education and mentorship at UTech,
Ja.
“Placing second in this esteemed competition is both a humbling and exhilarating experience,” said
Grizzle. “It affirms my belief in the power of positive attitude, perseverance, and the importance of representing one’s institution and country with pride. I am grateful for the support of my university
family, and peers who have been instrumental in this achievement.”
Grizzle also did exceptionally well in the main event at the championship – debating, where he, along
with teammate, Matthew Douglas engaged in high-level intellectual discourse over nine rounds of
debates.
Success for Grizzle not only highlights his brilliance but also shines a spotlight on Jamaica’s potential to compete and excel on the global academic stage. His journey to the finals serves as an inspiration to other students across the Caribbean, proving that dedication and hard work can break barriers and open doors to unprecedented opportunities.
As Truston Grizzle continues his academic journey, he remains committed to making a positive impact both locally and internationally. His success at the WUDC 2025 is just the beginning of what promises to be a stellar career in law and public advocacy.
