UWI saddened by death of student on campus

The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus has extended its condolences to the family members and friends of Kareem A Medley, a student of the institution who died earlier today.

Reports are that Medley was found unresponsive in his dorm room at the Elsa Leo-Rhynie Hall today (March 8), and was later pronounced dead. Our Today understands that the deceased reportedly had epilepsy and is suspected to have suffered a seizure.

In a brief statement sent to media personnel a short while ago, UWI said: “We are deeply saddened by this news and extend our condolences to the family, friends and hall-mates of the deceased student.”

They added that upon being notified, the student’s parents and the police were contacted and the body removed.

“Counsellors and members of the Chaplaincy unit have been deployed to engage students in the Elsa Leo-Rhynie Hall of Residence who have a need for support during this difficult time. A similar session is being organized within the Faculty of Humanities & Education,” said UWI.

The university did not reveal the student’s identity, but sources have confirmed to Our Today that the deceased is Kareem A Medley.

Medley was a student of the Caribbean School of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), marketer and creative director.

He was also the public relations officer (PRO) for the ELR Towers Hall and lead producer for the WomanUP radio show on Newstalk 93FM.
