As Tropical Storm Melissa looms over the Caribbean, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus has taken swift action to ensure the safety of its students.
In response to the recent Hurricane Watch issued by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica on Thursday, campus officials have ordered all Jamaican students residing in on-campus halls to vacate immediately.
This measure is part of the university’s shift to fully online operations in anticipation of severe weather conditions.
According to a memorandum from Registrar Donovan Stanberry, the decision was made after an assessment of the potential risks posed by the approaching storm. “Given that physical activities on campus will be halted, we are instructing our Jamaican students in residence to begin vacating the halls immediately,” Stanberry announced. Meanwhile, students from regional and international locations will be permitted to remain on campus until further notice.
The university emphasised that staff will continue working remotely during this period, with only essential personnel remaining on-site to oversee campus safety. The advisory is expected to stay in effect throughout the weekend, with updates to follow as the situation develops.
In a related move, the University of Technology transitioned to online classes on Wednesday, further exemplifying the region’s proactive approach to weather-related disruptions.
