Owing to the impact of Potential Cyclone 22, Jamaica’s two biggest universities have shifted both academic and administrative operations online on Friday (November 17).
The University of the West Indies (UWI), in a circulated memo to students and staff, advised operations will be conducted remotely where possible “with the exception of the emergency management teams required to safeguard the Mona campus”.
“The UWI Mona encourages staff and students to be safe and to take the necessary actions to protect lives and livelihood. Further information will be provided as the day progresses,”

Similarly, the University of Technology (UTech) says all classes will be via remotely today.
The Papine-based institution, which hosts its graduation ceremony today, added that except for graduands, students should avoid coming to the campus today due to the significant rainfall.
“Only essential Faculty and staff who are required for the execution of the UTech, Jamaica Graduation Ceremony should be on campus today.

The university will continue to monitor the reports from the Meteorological Service and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and provide further updates accordingly.
We encourage everyone to keep abreast of the media releases as we remain safe during the passing of this weather system.”
The Jamaica Meteorological Service activated a tropical storm watch for the island on Thursday night, and warns heavy rains are likely to affect much of the country into Sunday as Potential Cyclone 22 makes landfall early Saturday.
