The Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) has announced that it has received approval to have vaccinated fans in the stadium for the 2022 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in April.

ISSA also announced in a statement on Wednesday (February 23) that it has received permission to restart several other high school sports that have been shut down for more than a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Approval has been granted for the annual ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships to be staged from April 5 to Saturday, April 9. Fully vaccinated fans will also get the opportunity to attend Champs this year,” ISSA said in its statement.

However, there was no indication as to how many fans will be allowed inside the stadium for the championships that were cancelled in 2020 when the outbreak first began in March that year.

Champs resumed in 2021 under strict protocols that included no fans inside the stadium. Notwithstanding the absence of fans, the globally famous high school meet witnessed outstanding performances from the athletes as Jamaica College and Edwin Allen won the boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively.

Regarding the resumption of other high school sports, ISSA said: “Over the next two weeks, competitions will begin for U19 Girls Netball, U19 Boys Basketball, U19 Cricket as well as U16 Girls Football.”

ISSA said it would release details on the competitions to the stakeholders and the general public over the next few days.
