Venesha Phillips, the political turncoat who represented the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) for the Papine Divsion in the local government election, has accepted defeat.

In a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Phillips said: “The results are in and the Papine Divsion has been won by the PNP! Congratulations to Darrington Ferguson. All the best in the KSMAC [Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation] and in giving service to the people.”

Darrington Ferguson staged a major upset in defeating Venesha Phillips, as the Papine Divsion remains under the control of the People’s National Party (PNP) on Monday evening (February 26).

As at 8:32 p.m., with all 44 boxes counted by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), Ferguson amassed 2,113 votes to outclass political turncoat Phillips, who represented the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) with 1,854 votes.

Independent candidate Georgea Plato ended with 61 ballots to her credit as the Papine Division, a traditional PNP stronghold, remains orange.

Kari Douglas, who switched allegiance from the PNP the JLP has accepted defeat. She was defeated in this evening’s Local Government Election in the Trafalgar Divsion by Jessie James of the PNP.

“I am immensely grateful for the overwhelming support you have shown to me throughout the 12 years. I have had the privilege of serving our beloved Trafalgar Division, this journey and our achievements have been one, I am truly proud of. To every voter who placed their trust in me once again in this campaign, I extend my heartfelt. Thanks,” Douglas said.

Reading Time: 3 minutesThe Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO), recently concluded a two-day After-Action Review (AAR) workshop held from March 24–25. The workshop aimed to strengthen Jamaica’s preparedness and response systems following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

After-Action Reviews are a standard tool in emergency management, used to assess response efforts, capture lessons learned, and improve coordination, planning, and operational systems for future events. Importantly, aligning the AAR process with the International Health Regulations (IHR) ensures that the evaluation of public health emergencies meets globally recognised standards, strengthening Jamaica’s ability to detect, assess, report, and respond to health threats in a timely and effective manner.

In a statement released Tuesday (March), USCIS said its review of pending workloads and benefit applications revealed that prior screening measures were “wholly inadequate.” According to the agency, many applicants for naturalisation and lawful permanent residence were not sufficiently vetted, creating risks to national security and public safety while undermining the integrity of the immigration system.
