Russians caught in the middle of their country’s forceful invasion of Ukraine find themselves with ever-shrinking means of financing everyday activities as major American corporations Visa and Mastercard announced service disruptions on Saturday (March 5).
Visa Inc., in a statement, said it was suspending operations in Russia over the invasion of Ukraine and that it would work with its clients and partners to cease all transactions in Russia in the coming days.
Visa cards issued by financial institutions outside of Russia will no longer work in Russia, the company added.
Mastercard Inc., for its part, advised that cards issued by Russian banks will no longer be supported by Mastercard network and any Mastercard issued outside of country will not work at Russian merchants or automated teller machines (ATMs).
Mastercard said it decided to suspend its network services in Russia following its recent action to block multiple Russian financial institutions from the company’s payment network, as required by regulators globally.
Visa also said this week it blocked multiple Russian financial institutions from its network in compliance with government sanctions imposed over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The News Agency TASS reported that Sberbank Rossii PAO, Russia’s largest lender, said sanctions announced by Visa Inc and Mastercard Inc would not affect users of the cards it issues in Russia.
