The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) says all polling stations opened as scheduled and operational for the Local Government Election that is now underway.

Voting will take place at 6,726 polling stations in 2,148 locations across the island.

The polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 5 p.m., after which the preliminary counting of ballots will take place inside the polling stations.

The ECJ says 98 per cent of polling stations opened on time while the other 2.0 per cent opened before 7:30 a.m.

After being postponed three times, Jamaicans are heading to the polls to cast their ballots in the long-awaited local government election. The election was initially due in 2020, however, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was further postponed in 2022 and February 2023.

A total of 2,001,759 Jamaicans are eligible to vote in today’s election.
