Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has been denied entry to Canada and will miss his country’s World Cup group match against Germany on Saturday.

The Nice striker, 23, was recently arrested in France as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged spot fixing in Ligue 1. He is accused of intentionally picking up a yellow card during a match against Metz in May, with authorities also probing wider claims of betting related fraud and corruption.

French prosecutors confirmed the arrest of a 23 year old Ligue 1 player, while stopping short of naming him. The Ligue de Football Professionnel later said it had been alerted to unusually high betting activity linked to a booking involving Wahi.

The Ivorian Football Federation said it had not been formally informed of any legal proceedings but confirmed that the necessary clearance for Wahi to enter Canada could not be secured. The player will remain in the United States while the squad continues its tournament schedule.

Wahi had featured in Ivory Coast’s win over Ecuador earlier in the tournament and was expected to play a key role moving forward. He is now the second player at the tournament to be blocked from entering Canada, following Ghana’s Thomas Partey, who was also denied entry due to separate legal issues.
