Chinese Ambassador Chen Daojiang has completed his tenure in Jamaica and will take on a new assignment as China’s chief envoy to Mexico.

He will be succeeded in Jamaica by Ambassador Wang Jinfeng.

Ambassador Chen Daojiang did a good job in Jamaica and made an effort to understand the country’s issues. He championed Chinese interests in Jamaica and made a special effort to bolster cultural ties between the two countries.

One got the impression that he is an erudite man, very intelligent and very proud of his country and its accomplishments.

Being assigned to Mexico must be seen as a promotion and an acknowledgement of his diplomatic abilities. What he was able to do in Jamaica was noted by Beijing.

I remember when he first began as ambassador to Jamaica in 2022, his first public engagement being the announcement of the Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project. Ambassador Chen took online lessons to deliver his speech in English in front of Jamaica’s leading dignitaries. That couldn’t have been easy, but it speaks volumes about his character.

His English became progressively better, and so too did his confidence, the longer he went about his duties in Jamaica.

Ambassador Chen went on to pen a number of thought-provoking articles, stressing friendship and economic cooperation between China and Jamaica.

He is a gentleman, and it came as no surprise that he is moving up the diplomatic ladder.

Just before he left Jamaica, he presided over the inaugural Chinese Dragon Boat Festival which took place at Port Royal.

Ambassador Chen took the time to visit Our Today earlier this year and even edited and published a few stories guided by editors Paul Henry and Gavin Riley. He met the staff and was shown our operations. We also discussed some of Jamaica’s top issues making the news before going to lunch.

It was a day to remember.
