The Jamaican Government is making good on its promise to provide 50 new garbage trucks to complement the fleet of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

According to Robert Morgan, minister with responsibility for information in the Office of the Prime Minister, the trucks, which form part of the 100 trucks for which funds had previously had to be diverted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are to arrive this month.

Back in July, Prime Minister Andrew Holness had indicated, while addressing a Jamaica Labour Party Central Executive council meeting in Montego Bay, St James, that the trucks had been ordered.

“We have bought and brought in new trucks, but it was just not enough, and last year we should have brought in another set, 100 trucks, but the resources that were dedicated to that had to be diverted into the pandemic management. To take the funds and put it into the management of COVID-19 meant that the 100 trucks we had on order, we just couldn’t do it (complete the purchase),” Holness had told the meeting.

“This year we have 50 trucks coming, they are on order, and hopefully you will start to see some coming in before the year is out, and that will help in the collection of waste.”

The collection of garbage has been an ongoing concern in the island, with residents of various communities across the island regularly complaining that the NSWMA does not visit their areas in a timely manner.

Holness had also noted during the July meeting that the Government was in the final stages of developing a new framework for waste management in the island which would see the introduction of a waste-to-energy programme.
