Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke has reiterated the Government’s plan to continue tackling long-standing issues of contract employment and social security within the public sector as he announced plans to introduce a bill to streamline Customs operations.

Clarke highlighted the Government’s commitment to converting temporary positions into permanent roles, bringing job security to thousands of Jamaicans.

Over the past 12 months, he said the Government has taken decisive action, converting 927 doctors, 1,000 police officers, 600 cooks in the secondary system, 367 watchmen, and 659 caregivers to permanent positions. This move has impacted over 10,000 individuals employed under public contracts, marking a significant stride in the Government’s efforts to address job uncertainty.

Clarke highlighted that the next focus is on sanitation workers and strengthening social security in the country.

In a statement today, Phillips said the clarification was necessary following the JUTC’s announcement that it was abandoning its failed Express Service (610Ex) route to Ocho Rios and converting it into a regular Kingston to Ocho Rios route. He pointed to Transport Authority regulations, which require Origin and Destination surveys as well as seat assessments before a rural stage carriage licence can be issued to an operator for rural routes.
