A floral tribute commemorating the 93rd anniversary of the birth of the late Edward Seaga was held on Sunday (May 28) at the National Heroes Park in Kingston.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in his reflection speech, hailed Seaga as a  visionary leader.

Seaga, who died in May 2019, served as Jamaica’s fifth prime minister and was one of the longest serving leaders of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

The firebrand politician was also the longest-serving parliamentarian, representing constituents in Western Kingston for more 40 years.

Reading Time: 2 minutesOpposition Spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, has critiqued the government’s handling of the public transportation sector, stating that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is now in its worst financial and operational state in history.

Phillips stated that the system is in decline, citing that between 2016 and 2024, the number of passengers carried by the JUTC fell from 63 million to just 18 million. Over the same period, operational cost recovery plummeted from 70% to 12%, while farebox revenue dropped from $4.5 billion to $1.4 billion.
