Raúl Castro confirmed his resignation from the leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba during the eighth Congress of the ruling party, the only one allowed on the island, which was held Friday (April 16) in Havana, assuring that his intention is to give step to a new generation.
“I fervently believe in the strength and exemplary and understanding of my compatriots, and as long as I live I will be ready with my foot in the stirrups to defend the homeland, the revolution and socialism,” Castro told hundreds of party delegates gathered in a convention centre in Havana, the capital of the country.

Castro is 89 years old and has led the party since the death of his brother, Fidel Castro, in 2016.
President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the 60-year-old politician who succeeded Castro as president in 2018, is believed to assume the reins of the only legal political party in Cuba.
Both the island and the Communist Party have been under the leadership of one of the Castro brothers since the 1959 revolution.
