The Watchman Christian Leadership Alliance (WCLA) joins the entire nation in a state of deep mourning and solemn reflection following the barbaric killing of a female congregant, Cora Thompson, during a service at the New Testament Church of God in Waterlane, St James yesterday. This act of extreme cowardice represents another heartbreaking low in our national history, signalling a disregard for the law, the people, and the fear of the Almighty that we dare not ignore.
For generations, the Church has stood as the final boundary of safety and a “city of refuge” within our communities. The sanctuary was the one place where even the most hardened hearts paused in respect. However, from other shocking shootings (including church-related), to the tragedy witnessed yesterday, we are seeing a systematic dismantling of that sacred boundary. When the pews become a scene of carnage, it indicates that our national moral compass requires more than just repair—it requires a spiritual rebirth. The history of this nation is built on the foundation of the Church, and to see that foundation stained with the blood of the innocent is a grief that transcends words.
Our immediate focus remains on the family of our departed sister and her church family. To lose a loved one is a tragedy; to lose them in the middle of a church service is an unimaginable trauma. The WCLA extends our deepest pastoral arms to the family and the local congregation. We pray that the “Peace which passes all understanding” will guard their hearts during this dark hour.
We remain unshakably committed to the Gospel of Peace and to Jesus the author of Life. As for other murders, we call on the Police to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrator and bringing the person or persons before the courts. We also call on all Jamaicans to let this tragedy be part of the catalyst that helps us to move deeply to foster a culture of life, respect, and divine reverence.
