The eyes are one of the most important sensory organs of the body, which allow us to see and perceive the physical world.

The main function of the eye is to capture light from the environment around us and convert it into a form that the brain can use.

While they play an important role in vision, some common diseases may affect the eyes if they are not properly cared for. These include cataracts, diabetes-related retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Our Today has put together some tips you can employ in your daily life to boost eye health.

Diet

The first step in caring for the eye is to maintain a well-balanced diet. This includes servings of fruits, fish, leafy vegetables, eggs, legumes, nuts, beans, lean meat, and poultry. Foods rich in the naturally occurring carotenoid, beta-carotene, are also excellent choices as the body naturally converts it into Vitamin A.

Simple eye exercise coupled with diet can also play an important role in eye health. Exercises such as blinking, palming, zooming, and near and far focusing are some common exercises that can help with eye health.

Sleep

Studies have shown that adequate sleep is important for maintaining good eye health. The eyes require at least five hours of sleep to replenish themselves in order to function efficiently throughout the day.

Sleep deprivation may result may result in eye problems such as dry eyes, eye spasms, twitching while extensive sleep deprivation may result in glaucoma.

Eye examination

A comprehensive eye examination conducted by an ophthalmologist is generally the only tool to determine whether the eyes are healthy. Eye exams are used to detect early signs of vision problems.

It is recommended that adults have an eye exam at least every two years, even if there are no vision problems.

Smoking

Studies have shown that smoking increases the risk of some eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Smoking is known to do more harm than good. Saying no to smoking is a step to boosting your eye health.
