As Jamaica sees an increase in dengue cases at the start of the annual peak transmission season, from August to December, this is generally a time when individuals are urged to eradicate mosquito breeding sites around their home to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness reports that its surveillance unit has seen a 13 per cent increase in dengue cases since the start of the year, which is above the number reported in the 2021 and 2022 epidemiological years.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV) transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

The Aedes agypti mosquito is a known carrier of the dengue virus, among other viruses such as yellow fever, zika virus and chikungunya.

High fever

While many people who contract the dengue virus do not have symptoms, there are some common warning signs that individuals should look out for that may be linked to the virus.

One of the most common warning signs of dengue is high fever,104 degrees Fahrenheit or 40 degrees Celsius. According to the WHO, persons with dengue can have mild or no symptoms, which may get better between one to two weeks, while others may have severe symptoms that can lead to death.

High fever is classified as a mild dengue symptom, which may begin four to 10 days after becoming infected.

Severe headache

Another common symptom associated with the viral infection include severe headache, which can be both painful and uncomfortable for persons with the virus.

Persons who are experiencing these symptoms may receive temporary relief by taking painkillers. However, it is recommended that individuals seek the medical advice of a healthcare provider to aid in a correct diagnosis and treatment.

Muscle and joint pains

Muscle and joint pains are two common symptoms that are associated with dengue fever during the early stage of the illness.

Pain behind the eyes

Persons who experience pain behind the eyes should also speak to a medical provider because this is another common symptom that is linked to dengue fever.

Rash

Several medical officials have identified rashes as a common indicator of the vector disease, which may be seen in the earlier stage of the illness and can appear at any section of the body. These rashes are described as red and itchy, which may become very uncomfortable for persons with the illness.

It is recommended that individuals seek the medical expertise of a healthcare professional to aid in the treatment of the symptom. Some doctors may recommend medicinal ointments that may relieve itching.
