Healthy eating habits and exercise play an important role in the overall health and well-being of individuals, especially for persons who are living with diabetes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines diabetes as a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Studies have shown that there are some foods that offer great nutritional benefits for persons living with diabetes, while there are some foods that persons living with diabetes should avoid.

Our Today has put together a list of foods that persons living with diabetes should include in their diet.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables are good for people living with diabetes because they can help to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Green leafy vegetables such as callaloo, spinach, broccoli, and cabbage are good sources of potassium, fiber, and protein that are great for people living with diabetes.

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines, and grapefruit are also good for persons living with diabetes because they contain pectin, which is a soluble fiber that helps to lower blood glucose and cholesterol.

These fruits are also packed with vitamin C, flavonoids, and fiber which provide several health benefits such as reducing inflammation, boosting the body’s immune system, and reducing the risk of diabetes.

Fish

Fish is another good source of vitamin D, omega-3, and protein that are good for skin, bone, and eye health. Fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel are all good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

According to the American Diabetes Association, persons with diabetes should consume fish twice per week.

Nuts

Nuts are not only a great snack option but they also help to control blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of heart disease.

People with diabetes can help regulate their chronic condition by consuming nuts such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, and hazelnuts that are packed with healthy fats, protein, and vitamins.
