Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a crucial opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer.

The month of October is often dedicated to the cause.

In Jamaica, where the statistics are alarming, it’s vital to encourage regular screenings and educate the public about risk factors and symptoms. According to statistics from the Jamaica Cancer Observatory in 2020, Jamaica recorded 1,208 cases of breast cancer.

We all know of someone who is living with the disease or has died as a result of breast cancer. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Jamaican women.

Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumours. If left unchecked, the tumours can spread throughout the body and become fatal.

While the disease is more prevalent in women, men also develop breast cancer.

There are several risk factors for women developing breast cancer, such as age, genes, lifestyle choices, and physical inactivity.

If you are a female, then here are some simple ways to do a self-breast examination at home.

While in the shower

In the shower, make sure you’re in a comfortable posture that allows you to easily reach your breasts. Apply soap or water to your hands to make it easier to glide over your skin.

The breast tissue will spread and become simpler to examine if you raise your opposing arm above your head. Lightly press down in a circular motion on the breast using the pads of your fingers, not the tips. Work your way toward the nipple, starting from the outside.

Cover the whole breast, including the space beneath the arm. Take note of any lumps, bumps, or textural variations. Squeeze the nipple gently to feel for any changes or odd discharge. Change arms and repeat the process.

While laying down

Lying down can make it easier for you to feel your breast tissue when performing a breast self-examination. On a level surface, such as a bed or a mat, lie down on your back.

Place a small pillow or towel under your right shoulder to elevate it. This facilitates spreading the breast tissue and facilitates examination.

Raise your arm to the top of your head. This facilitates the breast tissue’s stretching. Include the area behind the arm in the total coverage of the breast. Take note of any lumps, bumps, or textural variations. Squeeze the nipple gently to feel for any changes or odd discharge. After switching arms, proceed with the opposite breast.
