The month of June is being observed as Men’s Health Awareness Month, aimed at raising awareness surrounding preventable men’s health issues while encouraging improved health-seeking behaviours among men.

The primary health conditions reported among Jamaican men aged 50 and older are cancer, kidney or bladder conditions, hypertension, diabetes, and prostate cancer.

Poor health-seeking behaviour among men is said to directly influence their development of several chronic illnesses in later stages of their lives. Here are some simple steps men can adopt to improve their health as they age.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is well-known for improving physical and mental well-being. However, the demands of everyday life often prevent many from exercising regularly. A 30-minute walk daily can yield several health benefits, such as reducing the risk of certain cancers and diabetes. Regular physical activity can also help men maintain a healthy weight and improve their quality of life.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for boosting heart health, maintaining a healthy weight, supporting brain health, and reducing stress. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults aged 25 to 64 require an average of 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, while adults over 64 years old may require 7 to 8 hours of rest per night.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet is a vital step men can take to improve their health. A healthy diet provides the body with essential nutrients and minerals necessary for development and proper functioning. This includes a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins, whole grains, and nuts.

Limit Alcohol Consumption and Smoking

Excessive alcohol consumption can have immediate and long-term effects on the body, including harm to the liver, pancreas, and heart, and an increased risk of some types of cancer.

Limiting alcohol consumption is a crucial step for better health. Similarly, smoking can cause long-term negative effects, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Get Regular Screenings

The overall health-seeking behaviour of men is generally poor due to hesitance in seeking medical attention.

It is recommended that men aged 50 and older have a yearly physical exam, while men younger than 50 should have a physical exam every three to five years, according to the Mayo Clinic. Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals are vital for detecting illnesses in their early stages and ensuring timely treatment.
