Several countries have begun to report cases of the clade 1b variant of the mpox virus (formerly monkeypox), and with the country’s borders remaining open for travel, it is only a matter of time before it reaches the island’s shores.

The new strain of the virus, which was detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has already spread outside of the African continent to Thailand, Sweden, the Philippines and Pakistan.

The upsurge in cases in the DRC has led to the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring mpox a public health emergency of international concern. Mpox is a zoonotic disease caused by infection with a virus known as the monkeypox virus.

The virus is part of the same family as the virus that causes smallpox.

Clad 1b is said to be far more contagious and severe when compared to the clad II variant, which caused an outbreak in 2022. The Mpox variants spread through direct contact with infected animals, close contact or intimate contact with infected persons, and direct contact with contaminated materials.

Children, persons with a history of eczema, pregnant women and persons with a weak immune system are at a greater risk of developing the disease.

Handwashing

Viruses generally spread when you come into contact with an infected person or contaminated area. Reduce the spread of mpox by practising proper sanitation habits, such as washing your hands with water and soap. Clean and disinfect surfaces, toys and other frequently touched areas thoroughly.

Adults should encourage children to adopt these practices as well, especially with the new academic year set to commence in a few days.

Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables is a great way to boost your immune system. There are also immune system supplements containing essential vitamins that you can purchase at your local pharmacy.

Exercise

Research has shown that regular physical activity helps to increase the circulation of immune cells in the body. This will help your body be better equipped to fight off viruses such as mpox.

Practice safe sex

It has been established that one of the ways mpox is transferred is through intimate contact. As such, limit your risk of contracting the virus by practicing safe sex, such as using a condom.

Get vaccinated

There are vaccines available for mpox. They are recommended for people who have been exposed to the virus or who are likely to be exposed. Find out from your health care provider if you are among the group the vaccine is recommended.
