Sir Garfield Sobers

Barbadian and West Indies cricket icon Sir Garfield Sobers has died today. He was 89.

Sobers, who is a National Hero in Barbados, was widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in cricket.

Sir Garry, as he was affectionately called, helped the West Indies to the top of world cricket. Hr made his debut in 1954 and ended his illustrious career in 1974, hitting 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78. In 1958, at Sabina Park in Jamaica, Sobers set a new batting world record by hitting a majestic 365 not out, and what made it even more remarkable was that it was his first Test century and he was just 21 years old. That record lasted for 36 years before another West Indian, Brian Lara, broke it in 1994, making 410.

Sobers, who hit 26 centuries and 30 50s, also took 235 wickets, taking five wickets in an innings six times. He was the Wisden Cricketer of the Year (1964),

Wisden Cricketer of the Century (2000), ICC Cricket Hall of Fame (2009) and had Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy named after him.

He was knighted in England in 1975 for his services to cricket.
