Roston Chase led a brief fightback against Sri Lanka on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle on Monday (November 22) but by the end of the day, the visitors were in real trouble at 113-6 still 273 runs behind the hosts’ first innings score of 386.

Kyle Mayers was not out on 22 and Jason Holder on one as the West Indies let an early rally slip. Kraigg Brathwaite was the best of the West Indies batsmen with 41 and Jermaine Blackwood scored 20. The pair had gotten the visitors off to a solid start with an opening stand of 46.

However, once Blackwood got out, the West Indies lost their next five wickets for 54 runs.

Earlier, Chase took 5-83 as the West Indies restricted Sri Lanka, 267-3 overnight to 386 all out. Overnight batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne, 132 overnight, was dismissed for 147 while batsman Dhananjaya de Silva, who resumed from his overnight score of 56, made 61.

However, once they were out the West Indies made steady progress with the ball as only Dinesh Chandimal (45) provided any real resistance to the bowling of Chase and Jomel Warrican who took 3-87).

Shannon Gabriel took 2-69.

However, any thoughts that the West Indies harboured of climbing back into the match with the bat were dashed as Shai Hope (10), Roston Chase (2) and nightwatchman Jomel Warrican (1) fell in quick succession to leave the West Indies in a hole, still, 74 runs away from avoiding a follow-on and with three days’ play remaining.
