West Indies Women won the second One Day International (ODI) in a super over against South Africa on Monday (January 31) after both teams made identical scores in their rain-affected match at Johannesburg.

In a match reduced to 41 overs apiece, because of rain delays, both teams were bowled out for 160 before Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews starred in a record Super Over of 25 without loss against Shabnim Ismail.

South Africa’s Chloe Tryon and Tazmin Brits got off to a good start with 15 runs off the first four balls off Hayley Matthews, but managed only two off the last two to concede the match.

In the actual match, Dottin top scored with 37 but the West Indies collapsed to 83-6 as Ayabonga Khaka (5-26), Sune Luus (2-25) and Masabata Klaas (2-42) combined to scythe through the visitors’ top order.

However, Chedean Nation and Chinelle Henry posted 54 for the seventh-wicket to put the West Indies Women back in the hunt.

Henry became Khaka’s fourth victim and Shamilia Connell was out lbw off the next ball to leave West Indies needing 24 runs with two wickets in hand.

Nation and Selman then shared 21 runs for the ninth wicket before Nation was caught off Masabata Klaas with the West Indies three runs short of victory.

The scores were tied when Shakera Selman was trapped lbw by Shabnim Ishmail to send the match to a super over.

Earlier, South Africa’s openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits each scored 25 got off to a good start with an opening stand of 53. However, both were removed by Chinelle Henry to have South Africa 58-2.

After this, the home side lost wickets regularly as all five West Indies bowlers each took two wickets. The only real resistance came from Luus, who scored a defiant 46 before she was dismissed by Shamilia Connell.

Luus fell in the 32nd over after which South Africa lost their remaining five wickets for 40 runs.
