It is common knowledge that mention of the words ‘doctor’ or ‘hospital’ can send many Jamaican males running for the hills.

But, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is trying to change this narrative, encouraging men to take health preservation more seriously.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, falling under the theme ‘The More You Know, You’ll Go…Get Screened’.

According to Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, prostate cancer has become one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican males and preventative measures such as screenings need to be taken.

But why are screenings important?

According to the Mayo Clinic, prostate cancer in its earlier stages can go undetected because there may not be any symptoms.

But, in the earlier stages it is also treatable.

As such, regular screening are important to prevent a more fatal diagnosis.

If a man is experiencing any of these symptoms they may be at risk for getting prostate cancer.

  • Trouble urinating
  • Decreased force in the stream of urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Blood in the semen
  • Bone pain
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Erectile dysfunction

If symptoms persist for a long period of time, then a trip to the doctor is needed to rule out prostate cancer.
