To people of the Caribbean, rum is ‘golden’. It is a drink that has served us well down the ages and we make some of the finest in the world.

Turn a deaf ear to those who say rum is not good for you and should be avoided.

Not true.

Here’s why a glass or two of rum is good for you and could help keep you going:

1. Helps with a healthy and strong heart.

2. Reduces cholesterol.

3. Aids peripheral artery disease prevention.

4. Acts as a blood thinner.

5. ‘Cures’ cold.

6. Makes good face masks to fight acne.

7. Soothes a sore throat.

8. A shot of rum contains about 95 calories, which is low compared with other alcoholic drinks.

9. Reduces erectile dysfunction.

10. Reduces the risk of gallstones.

11. Boosts the inner pirate in you.
