St Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras reportedly lost his cool at an umpire over what he believed were bad calls on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Things got heated at Busch Stadium Monday night when St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras lost his cool after a controversial strikeout, leading to an ejection, a chaotic dugout scene, and an unfortunate incident involving one of his own coaches.

The moment unfolded in the seventh inning of the Cards’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. After being called out on a low strike, a pitch that appeared borderline at best, Contreras initially started walking back toward the dugout, visibly frustrated but seemingly in control. That changed quickly.

As he approached the dugout, Contreras snapped, storming back toward home plate to confront the umpire. Shouting in the ump’s face, he had to be physically restrained by the Cardinals manager. The confrontation earned him an immediate ejection, but his frustration didn’t stop there.

After being tossed from the game, Contreras threw his bat in anger, unintentionally striking a nearby coach in the face. He later apologised, saying it wasn’t aimed at anyone. On his way to the clubhouse, he dumped a bucket of gum onto the field in a final act of protest.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Contreras said his frustration stemmed from what he believed were inconsistent strike zone calls.  He further explained that he wanted the pitches to be called fairly on both sides.

Despite the drama, the Cardinals pulled off a 7–6 win over the Pirates. But with the outburst drawing plenty of attention, Contreras is now likely facing a suspension, leaving the team to prepare for at least a short stretch without their fiery catcher.
