The winning streak for the West Indies was broken last night (June 19) as defending champions England defeated the hosts by eight wickets in their Super Eight opener at the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.

Following an unfortunate injury to opening batsman Brandon King (23), forcing him to retire early, the West Indies were restricted to 180-4 after Pooran (36) failed to repeat the impressive innings he did on Monday night.

For the first time this tournament, the Windies’ bowling attack was ineffective, neither of the left-arm spinners Akeal Hosein (0-35) and Gudakesh Motie (0-32), nor the fast bowlers Alzarri Joseph (0-32) and Romario Shepherd (0-41), managed to capture any wickets.

Shepherd was particularly ineffective for the ball and conceded a costly 30-run over, sinking the West Indies’ chances of winning.

English opener Phil Salt tore apart the bowling attack scoring 87 from 47 balls and closed out the game within 18 overs.

Having only made it into the second stage ahead of Scotland based on net run rate, taking down one of the tournament favourites will be a major confidence booster for England.

Both teams are the only two teams in history to have won two T20 World Cups.

England will play their next match against South Africa at the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium on Friday.

West Indies will play their next match against The United States after the ENG vs RSA game on Friday evening at the same stadium.
