Jamaican athlete Sara Misir has made an indelible mark in the world of motorsports. The 23-year-old auto racer, who became the first Caribbean woman to qualify for the the final of a Formula Woman competition in the United Kingdom, advanced to the final 11 of the competition.
The 11 will compete once again on Wednesday (March 9), where six will advance to the final round.
But, who is the woman behind the wheel? On this International Women’s Day, as we salute Misir, here are eight things to know about her.
1. Place of Birth
Sara was born in January 1998 at the Nuttall Memorial Hospital on Caledonia Drive in St Andrew.
2. Played football
She played football and was a goalkeeper, even going on to train with local teams.
3. Growing Up / Always been a winner!
As a child, as young as nine years old, she started racing dirt bikes and, at age 11, she even won a junior championship title.
Misir has also won two championship titles at Dover.
4. Scored a Goal?
During her time as a football player she once scored a goal while playing.
Why is this important? Because she was the goalkeeper! š
5. The First!
Sara is Jamaica’s first Formula Woman driver! She is also the first woman from the Caribbean to qualify for this race!
6. Trilingual
She is trilingual, meaning she is able speak three languages – English, Italian and Spanish.
7. Furthering Education
Sara is pursuing a Masters in Architecture at Florida International University. The Florida International University is a public research university that was founded in 1965.
8. Horseback Riding
She represented the island as a junior equestrian. This is an individual who does horseback riding.
