World Athletics President Sebastien Coe has donated US$100,000 (J$15.8m) to Jamaica’s athletics post-hurricane recovery efforts, while Sports Minister Olivia Grange revealed that work is set to start on National Stadium redevelopment in July 2027.

Coe made the announcement at the media briefing Wednesday morning at the offices of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) in St Andrew.

The World Athletics boss arrived in Jamaica on Sunday and visited areas that were damaged by Hurricane Melissa after paying visits to Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Sports Minister Olivia Grange, along with the hierarchy of the JAAA.

Coe highlighted the need to assist damaged schools as they are the cornerstone of Jamaica’s performance on the international stage.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Olivia Grange says work to redevelop the National Stadium is expected to commence in July 2027.

The National Stadium, which was built in 1962 with a capacity of 35,000, will be increased by 10,000 seats and be fitted with modern amenities to host any international event.
