India registered perhaps their most impressive victory in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The host nation went into the matchup today (October 29) against a struggling England team that has been in shockingly bad form all tournament.

The day began with a spot of bother for the Indians who were sent in to bat after losing the toss. After seven overs the hosts found themselves down two wickets, including that of their world-class talisman Virat Kohli, for just 27 runs.

It would be their captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma, who would settle the innings for the Indian side. A steadying 91-run fourth-wicket partnership between Sharma and KL Rahul would see the hosts get some momentum in the game.

Sharma would eventually be England’s fifth wicket after he fell on the penultimate ball of the 36th over.

Suryakumar Yadav would make a commendable contribution to the tail-end of the innings with his knock of 49 runs, which was the second-highest total of the batsmen for the day.

England put on an impressive bowling display to limit the prolific side to just 229 runs at the end of their 50 overs.

With just 4.6 runs required per over, it seemed likely that England could register just their second win of the competition and begin their crawl from the dungeon of the standings.

However, the prolific Indian bowling line-up would have other outcomes in mind.

The Indian bowling attack would send four English batsmen back to the pavilion with just 39 runs on the board.

By the time England had finally got to the crest of 100 runs, they had already lost 8 wickets and were clinging to life in what should have been a relatively easy run chase for the defending champions.

They were eventually bowled out for a measly 129 runs, handing India a 100-run victory.

Mohammed Shami backed up an incredible 5 wicket haul in India’s last outing with a remarkable display ending with 4 for 22 runs. He was supported by Jasprit Bumrah, who took 3 for 32, and Kuldeep Yadav with 2 for 24 runs.

Sharma’s knock of 87 runs earned him Man of the Match honours.

India remains the only unbeaten team in the competition with a perfect twelve points from 6 matches. They next face Sri Lanka for match number seven.

England, though not mathematically out of contention, will have a hard time turning around their competition. They next face Australia, who are firmly in fourth.
