The Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO) says every year, approximately 703,000 people take their life around the world.

In addition, for every suicide, 25 people make a suicide attempt and many more have serious thoughts of suicide.

Everyone at some point in their life has encountered someone who is either suicidal or has lost someone to suicide and each life lost is of great public health concern.

In recognition of this, the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) declared September 10 World Suicide Prevention Day in 2003.

The main aim of suicide prevention day is to raise awareness about the many lives that have been lost to suicide and create effective ways to prevent it.

This year’s theme is all about ‘Creating Hope Through Action.’

Under this theme, the WHO is calling on everyone to show kindness, be a listening ear and reduce the stigma surrounding suicide.

Through our actions, whether big or small, we can have a positive impact on those with suicidal thoughts, providing them with hope for a brighter tomorrow.

So, in recognition of this day, here are some tips on how you can help someone with suicidal thoughts.

1. Encourage them to see a professional

It may take some patience and a lot of persuading, but always encourage anyone having suicidal thoughts to see a professional.

Psychologists and counsellors are trained and equipped with adequate knowledge to help persons with suicidal tendancies.

But, do not stop there.

If they have decided to see a professional, have follow-up conversations to see if these sessions have been helpful and encourage them to continue attending.

2. Be a good listener

Being able to have a conversation with a caring friend can go a long way in suicide prevention.

Sometimes, all people need is someone they can talk to about the various challenges and feelings that they are having.

When they are able to share these feelings with someone who is willing to listen, they can release the unbearable build-up of pressure that can lead to a suicide attempt.

Be patient, but most of all listen.

3. Do not discount their feelings

While something may not seem like a big deal to you, it is a big deal to others.

As such, never let your own feelings get in the way of how they are feeling. The only thing that matters is how they perceive a situation.

If it feels important to them, then, in their mind, suicide may seem like a valid option.

Listen to what they are saying without offering judgments. Don’t be dismissive of their experiences or emotions.

4. Do not leave them alone

If someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, never leave them alone, especially if they threaten to endanger themselves.

Stay by their side and call for help if needed.

Also, remove anything within close proximity that they could potentially use to harm themselves such as knives, razor blades or pills.

5. Know that secrets kill

If someone you know expresses that they are having suicidal thoughts, tell someone who you think can help.

Even if the person asks you not to say anything do not keep it as a secret.

Having an angry friend or relative is better than keeping a secret that could lead to them taking their life.
