Potent Colors

Potent Colors, a young dancehall artiste, is hoping that his music can make a difference and bring awareness to the many issues that Jamaica is facing.

The artiste, who was born Keon-Kamari Chambers in Spanish Town, St Catherine, is heeding the call by using his talent to make a change and has released a new track called Medicine Jamaica Tribute where he pairs his songwriting skills and vocals to address violence against women in Jamaica.

The song addresses the recent murder of a mother and her four children in Clarendon, the case of Donna Lee Donaldson, who is suspected to have been killed but her body has not been found, and the missing case of University of the West Indies student Jasmine Dean, a blind young woman who went missing after leaving classes in February 2020.

“I wrote this song for the people and to be a voice for the voiceless. After witnessing all of the injustice that’s happening that has many people feeling that these incidents are being swept under the rug, I wondered how the families are coping and, also, we need to do better,” said Potent Colors.

The artiste also includes a touching tribute to Dean, who had a passion for music and singing, with one of her many covers ending the song with the aim of haunting the conscience of the listener and invoking the desire to participate in public discourse and the movement against gender-based violence, particularly against women.

Potent Colors is 21 years old. His name juxtaposes ‘Potent’, which means powerful, with ‘Color’ to symbolise his music talent and versatility.

The artiste describes himself as a dancehall and reggae artiste who began writing music at the age of nine.

His formal entry into music was at age 17 when he released the track Goals, produced by Gyptian’s Label Ryte Dyrekshan and producer Lion Nuffadat of Nuffadatrecords.

He also released an EP, Painting Melodies.

He was recently signed to the Kingston-based Ching’s Records.

Ching Boss.

The producer for the track, Richard Boodie, who is known as Ching Boss, has previously worked with artistes like Quada on Savage, Chronic Law (It’s Easy), Rygin King and Tommy Lee Sparta on Easy We Do It featuring Skirdle Sparta, and Teejay (Warn Dem) to name a few.

“I think it’s a very powerful song and I think that not just people in Jamaica but most people around the world can relate to the song,” Ching Boss said.

“It is a very emotional song and I think that it’s a message that someone young could sing a song like this. It’s really impressive to know that he is not singing about scamming and those kinds of things but rather something positive.”

Medicine Jamaica Tribute, available on all streaming platforms, was released on September 28.
