Flow recently joined the Jessie Ripoll Primary School to inspire the next generation of technology engineers at the school’s Boys’ Day activity last Thursday (March 30).

Senior managers of Flow’s technology operations team offered an eye-opening perspective on the exciting career opportunities in the telecommunications sector and the required skills.

The event saw senior managers from Flow’s technology operations team deliver an interactive presentation on the telecommunications sector’s exciting career opportunities and the skills required to succeed in the industry.

Michael Brown, Director of Technology Operations, Ron Howell, Head of Mobile, and Raymond Smith, Senior Manager of Technical Operations, led the presentation, which covered the evolution of mobile phones and how remote surveillance is conducted using drones.

The boys were able to engage with interactive content and ask questions, while learning about the difference between GSM and satellite mobile phones.

Jessie Ripoll Primary School is one of Jamaica’s top-ranked primary schools and consistently produces high performing students. Principal O’neil Stevens commented that the Boys’ Day activity encourages the involvement of fathers and male role models to better support the boys’ overall development.

“I was pleased with the male representation of the Flow team and for them helping our boys to understand that they can excel in life and do so with the proper values and attitudes,” Stevens said.

“A number of our boys have an avid interest in robotics and technology, and some are even interested in starting a drone club,” he continued.

Many of the boys expressed an avid interest in robotics and technology, with some interested in starting a drone club.

Stevens added that it was a blessing for Flow to present and demonstrate how the company uses drones in its daily work.

John-Marc Williams, a Grade 6 student, said he was impacted by the drone demonstration and learning about the characteristics he needs to develop as he matures. Williams enjoyed learning about how Flow uses drones to monitor cell towers in remote locations and the qualities he needs as a boy to achieve his goals in life.

In addition to the interactive presentation, Flow donated five tablets to boys in need, which will help fuel their digital literacy development. Brown noted that the telecommunications technology sector offers multifaceted career paths that are integrated into all areas of our lives.

Brown said, “The world of telecommunications technology provides fascinating career opportunities, and I’m happy for this session to inspire and capture the boys’ imagination about what a career in this field could look like for them.”

He added that the telecommunications technology sector plays a vital role in society’s development, and Flow wants to expose Jamaica’s brightest minds to the industry at a young age.
