Digicel is empowering and encouraging over 100 girls from rural and corporate area schools to consider education and careers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field.
The Digi-Women in ICT team will be stepping away from their desks to put on their mentorship hats in support of this initiative for International Girls in ICT Day.
The event, hosted in partnership with the Spectrum Management Authority (SMA), will take place at Hope Gardens and will include coding challenges, ICT career and skills guidance, mentorship sessions, and other related activities. The theme for this year’s event is “Digital Skills for Life”.

Antoinette Heirs, Head of Network Engineering at Digicel, emphasizes the importance of girls choosing STEAM careers, contributing to making the field of technology diverse and inclusive, and empowering their peers to do the same.
She also points out that when more girls choose STEAM careers, they contribute to bridging the gender digital divide, which is important for greater levels of inclusiveness for women in tech.
Throughout the mentorship engagements with the students, Digicel will be using the opportunity to debunk professional stereotypes and highlight the world of opportunity that awaits these promising young girls.

Heirs will also share her passion for ICT and why it is necessary for girls to take on tech jobs and be part of the rapid technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are reshaping the way we live, learn and earn today.
The Digicel partnership with the SMA is a unique way for the regulator, which acts as an enabler of the digital spectrum that delivers the latest in wireless services, to take digital to the ‘last mile’ beginning with the next generation.
Digicel’s support of this initiative demonstrates its enduring responsibility to support tech users and innovators, while also promoting inclusiveness for women in tech.
