The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) is proud to announce our 2026 Jamaica Charity Gala, to be held on June 6 at the iconic Loews Coral Gables in Florida.

This signature event brings together philanthropists, business leaders, private-sector government stakeholders, and friends of Jamaica for an unforgettable evening of celebration, impact, and giving. We are honoured to recognise this year’s awardees:

Michael Capponi, Founder and President of Global Empowerment Mission

1. Global Empowerment Mission(GEM) – International Humanitarian Award
In recognition of its visionary humanitarian leadership and unwavering commitment to delivering rapid, innovative, and dignified disaster relief worldwide, Global Empowerment Mission has set a powerful standard for impact in times of crisis. In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl and most recently, Hurricane Melissa, GEM played a pivotal role in mobilising critical resources, supporting affected families, and accelerating early recovery efforts—bringing both urgency and compassion to communities most in need.

Andrew Mahfood, Chairman, Food for the Poor

2. Food For The Poor – International Humanitarian Award
Food For The Poor has long been a cornerstone in delivering compassionate, large-scale support to vulnerable communities across the Caribbean and beyond. In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, their partnership was instrumental in mobilising essential supplies and resources, helping to stabilise communities and support both immediate relief and the path to recovery.
