The travel restrictions applicable for the United Kingdom (UK) are to remain in place for another month.

The extension of the ban until February 28 is part of the prevention and containment strategies being employed by the Government to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We continue to monitor developments relating to the United Kingdom (UK) variant of the virus,” said Prime Minister Andrew Holness during the sitting of the House of Representatives on January 26.

“While we remain focused on managing the pandemic, we have to concurrently focus on restoring jobs, gradually returning our economy back to productive capacity.”

Excluding the UK, Holness said the current protocols under the Controlled Entry programme for both residents and visitors will remain until April 15, 2021.

“This was done at the request of the tourism trade to provide some degree of certainty to travellers who want to make their vacation and travel plans,” he said.

In the meantime, Holness added that the restrictions applicable to hospitals, nursing homes and infirmaries will remain in place.

“While we remain focused on managing the pandemic, we have to concurrently focus on restoring jobs, gradually returning our economy back to productive capacity,” he said.

Holess said that since coming into government in 2016, his administration has tripled the amount of money spent on national security. “On average, we spend $9 billion every year on national security. So, the reduction that you’re seeing now didn’t happen overnight or by chance,” Holness said.

Reading Time: 3 minutesOpposition Leader of the People’s National Party, Mark Golding, said Jamaica must stand against the erosion of good governance following the appointment of Dennis Chung as Chief Technical Director (CTD) of the Financial Investigation Division.

Golding said the PNP does not support the government’s defilement of principle and is urging citizens to stand against corruption. “We do not support this; we stand against this. Time come for good governance in the country, time come for a government that is above board, and time come for a new government that the people can have trust and confidence in, that can rescue Jamaica from corruption and the mire of bad governance in which Jamaica is now enmeshed. Only the People’s National Party can do that under my leadership,” Golding said.

Reading Time: 2 minutesYoung Jamaica, the youth arm of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), has condemned the efforts by the People’s National Party (PNP) to pressure Dennis Chung into not accepting the post of Chief Technical Director (CTD) of the Financial Investigations Division (FID).

On Thursday, May 29, the PNP hosted a press conference expressing that the decision for Chung to head the Financial Investigations Division (FID) after openly declaring his views supporting Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s actions — the very agency now tasked with probing serious allegations linked to the prime minister’s statutory declarations — is unconscionable.
