Twitter users are today (April 29) reacting once again with venom and outrage at the Government’s handling of former Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament (MP) George Wright, who came under fire after a viral video surfaced, in which a man believed to be him is seen abusing a woman.
Today’s Twitter outrage is being fueled by new information which suggests that the now independent MP has taken a leave of absence from the House of Representatives for two months, possibly with pay, effective April 20, 2021.
The new information came to light during last evening’s (April 28) parliamentary sitting after Western St Thomas Member of Parliament, Anthony Hilton pressed for House Speaker Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert to disclose the reason for Wright’s leave and whether he would be compensated during the period of the leave.
On the matter of compensation, Dalrymple-Philibert said, “I suspect, like all other members who are absent from the House, he probably is still being compensated, and might I remind this Parliament that we have had members – several – that have been charged, that have sat here, that have been compensated and we have gone on.”
Given this information, @Phlymour came to the conclusion that “Beating women pays”.
At the same time, @ashdanej noted that the “George Wright issue just shows how backward we are. If it were a real country, moment allegations pop up either a resignation or a lawsuit for defamation. But in Jamaica man take a leave of absence and a church leader backing him”.

Dr Khia Josina Duncan, daughter of late former People’s National Party MP Dr DK Duncan, said: “Doctors and Nurses working with Covid, not getting Covid incentive (but) George Wright not working, gets paid.”
‘To tek bad tings mek joke’, as Jamaicans have become so well known for doing, attorney Gavin Goffe: “An MP gets paid if his absence is owing to illness or emergency. George Wright might be having trouble with his stool.”
