President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Michael Ricketts said he was honoured to be elected a vice president of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) during the virtual annual congress of the regional body on Saturday (November 20).
Ricketts became the second Jamaican to occupy the post, as the late Captain Horace Burrell was also a vice president of the organisation.
“I feel honoured that my regional colleagues have seen it fit to place their faith in my abilities to support the leadership of this important organisation,” he said.
“I will do everything within my power working with my colleagues to ensure that the mandate and expectations of this body are fulfilled,” Ricketts added.
Ricketts is a former chairman of the South Central Confederation and president of the Clarendon Football Association.
He was president of the Jamaica Football Federation under the leadership of Captain Horace Burrell, who died of cancer in June 2017.
Ricketts completed Burrell’s term and then was elected JFF president in 2019 on the promise of building on Captain Burrell’s legacy.
His presidency has been dogged by drama surrounding his administration’s handling of matters relating to the national senior squad that is currently vying for a spot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and conflict with national head coach Theodore Whitmore.
Whitmore now faces the axe as the Reggae Boyz hopes of qualifying for the world cup have dimmed in recent weeks with the team lagging in sixth place in the Octagonal round with seven points from eight games so far.
