

“Drink some tea.”
This is a saying probably every Jamaican has heard at least once in their life. The older generation, especially, tend to believe that tea cures just about everything, including headaches, bellyaches and chest pains. While tea may not alleviate every type of discomfort we may experience, the theory is not far off, as tea does provide a number of health benefits.
This ingrained part of the island’s culture goes beyond just curing common colds and occasional chest pains, tea is able to aid the digestive system, protect the heart, prevent weight loss among other things.
Strengthens Heart Health

Recent studies have shown that drinking tea can significantly reduce one’s risk of contracting serious heart diseases. Tea contains anti-inflammatory properties that can aid in soothing tissues found in arteries. This in turn lowers the risk of inflammation that can result in blood clotting or restriction of blood flow. Consuming tea can also aid in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.
Helps with Digestion

Drinking tea increases the speed and ease at which food digests in the body, which can treat or prevent a host of issues including nausea, upset stomach and diarrhea. Ginger and Peppermint tea especially are good for treating an upset stomach.
Contains Antioxidants

Antioxidants found in tea are able to lower the risk of neurological issues and prevent the onset of some chronic disease.
Supports Mental Health
The antioxidants found in tea helps to prevents oxidative stress which is a property able to cause damage to healthy cells. Pollution and other factors are able to present free radicals in the body, which can cause oxidative stress. However, antioxidants are able to eliminate the free radicals. Oxidative stress has been linked to dementia and depression. Research has shown that avid tea drinkers have lower stress levels and an improved overall health.
Decreases Cell Damage
Antioxidants help to decrease cell damage in the body. This can help to lower the risk of chronic disease.
Aids in weight loss

Green tea has been known to contribute to weight loss. The calorie free drink contains amino acids and caffeine which alerts the body to burn fat and provides a boost of energy (which is ideal for workout sessions) respectively. The weight-loss accelerant is also able to satisfy one’s sweet tooth and prevent one from suffering from dehydration.
Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
Tea consumption may aid in regulating blood sugar levels. Studies have shown where black tea is able to reduce blood sugar levels after a meal intake. This health benefit has been attributed to the polyphenols in tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant powers.
