In support of case management for the COVID-19 response, the Government of Germany, in collaboration with the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), donated oxygen cylinders to the Ministry of Health in Suriname.
The 230 steel oxygen cylinders have a capacity of 250 cubic feet and were procured and shipped through technical cooperation with PAHO.
They are to be distributed to various medical institutions in Suriname by the Ministry of Health and are currently stored at the Bedrijf Geneesmiddelen Voorzieningen Suriname (BGVS).
“Oxygen provision remains one of the main components in the package of care for severe cases of COVID-19 and may help to prevent the need for mechanical ventilation.”
Dr Karen Lewis-Bell, PAHO/WHO representative in Suriname
This is the second donation of much-needed supplies by Germany in collaboration with PAHO in the past six months, in support of the fight against COVID-19. An earlier donation this year from the German Government consisted of 462,500 medical masks procured through WHO/PAHO.
Suriname is continuing to strengthen its capacity for the management of cases of COVID-19 and PAHO said Germany has proven to be an invaluable partner during this stage of the pandemic in the South American state.
“Oxygen provision remains one of the main components in the package of care for severe cases of COVID-19 and may help to prevent the need for mechanical ventilation,” said Dr Karen Lewis-Bell, PAHO/WHO representative in Suriname.
“This donation of oxygen cylinders to the Ministry of Health demonstrates PAHO’s ongoing commitment to support the country in all pillars of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
