In anticipation of the approaching Tropical Storm Bret, the Jamaican Government has implemented proactive measures, placing all systems on standby. The Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Desmond McKenzie, confirmed the government’s readiness while addressing journalists during a tour of Balaclava and Santa Cruz in St. Elizabeth on Wednesday, (June 21).
As Tropical Storm Bret steadily advances towards the Lesser Antilles, the Meteorological Service of Jamaica has been closely monitoring its progress.
The storm is projected to move over the Eastern and Central Caribbean Sea on Friday and Saturday, weakening as it does so. Despite this, the Met Service has assured that Jamaica is not under any immediate threat from the storm.
Minister McKenzie emphasized the government’s preparedness to respond effectively to any potential impact. He stated, “I want to give the country assurance that we are ready to respond in the best way possible based on what confronts us.”
The Minister highlighted the nation’s robust shelter facilities, ongoing mitigation programs, and the comprehensive efforts undertaken since the Prime Minister launched the national hurricane preparedness campaign for the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane season earlier this month.
While expressing hope that Jamaica would be spared from the storm’s effects, Minister McKenzie assured the public that the government would continue to provide regular updates and warnings in the event of any significant changes or threats associated with Tropical Storm Bret.
