The D&G Foundation donated 50 new breathalyser kits valued at J$3.5 million to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) at its Elleston Road headquarters in Kingston to help target drivers who operate vehicles while intoxicated.

While making the presentation, Dianne Ashton-Smith, director of the D&G Foundation, said that the charitable arm of the beer maker is committed to promoting safe alcohol consumption in Jamaica.

“We want to ensure that when people consume alcohol, they consume it responsibly, but we also
want to protect our roads, so we thought what better way than to partner, as we believe for us to
reduce the misuse of alcohol, it takes the whole society,” said Ashton-Smith.

Head of the PSTEB, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, says the new kits are a welcomed gift because they will help to expand the branch’s capacity to target those who drive under the influence.

“These kits will impact us in a substantial way; the further we are able to distribute to stations, the
wider coverage we will have,” said McKenzie.

A breathalyser is a device used to estimate the blood alcohol content of a person.

The legal limit for alcohol is 35 micrograms per 100 ml of breath. Once exceeded, a person is liable to be brought into the nearest police station for more comprehensive testing. The results will be used as evidence in court.
