Senator Barry Griffin underscored the paramount importance of consumer protection in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Speaking at the Bahamian Senate on Wednesday, November 8, Griffin focused on the much-anticipated Consumer Protection Bill 2023, a legislative proposal that aims to fortify the rights of all consumers in the country.

Griffin, a staunch advocate for the ruling government, said: “I am sure that every Bahamian welcomes this bill and with its passage will bring this piece of legislation into the 21st century, in line with other Caribbean Nations, ultimately strengthening the way we protect our consumers, and more broadly the way commerce is executed in this country.”

The Consumer Protection Bill 2023, when signed into law, is poised to become a landmark piece of legislation. It delineates the responsibilities of service providers, elucidates consumer rights, and addresses critical facets such as product liability and unfair trade practices. Notably, it endows the Consumer Commission with enhanced authority, enabling swift investigation of complaints, the restriction and recall of goods, and the cessation of misleading or deceptive conduct.

In tandem with his advocacy for consumer protection, Griffin stressed the centrality of a robust competition policy. He asserted, “Competition policy is central to a country’s prosperity, driving lower prices, greater consumer choice, and high levels of innovation and economic productivity.”

The bill also introduces stiffer penalties for non-compliance, serving as a stern warning to businesses engaging in deceptive trade practices and false advertising. The government’s commitment to enforcing consumer protection laws is underscored by the empowerment of the Commission and the willingness to take legal action when necessary.

Underlining the government’s dedication to public education, Griffin affirmed that Bahamian consumers would be thoroughly educated about their rights and responsibilities. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to enlighten businesses about the provisions embedded in the consumer protection legislation. Griffin acknowledged the challenges faced by consumers in unfair commerce and emphasised the government’s commitment to fortify marketplace practices.

Griffin urged consumers to be vocal about their rights and to stand against deficiencies in trade and commerce, highlighting the potency they wield. He reassured the public of the government’s unwavering dedication to championing consumer rights and fostering fair competition. The envisioned outcome includes the eradication of scams and pyramid schemes from the market, ultimately fortifying consumer protection laws and ensuring a fair and transparent marketplace for all.
