Education Minister Fayval Williams says there is less anxiety among school administrators in relation to the number of teachers resigning in the public education sector.
“Anecdotally, when I speak to principals, I don’t see the level of anxiety that we saw in past years, and when I ask them about their figures, yes, they may see one, two, or three, but not at the level they experienced in 2022 or even in 2023. So, I am encouraged; I know that there are teachers who have already expressed a desire to leave the system, and I am sure we will get more, but to date, just anecdotally again, I am not hearing the hue and cry from among our principals,” Williams said.
She was speaking at a press conference on Monday (August 26) to provide an update on the 2024 CSEC/CAPE results.
The Minister did not provide any data to indicate the total number of teachers who have resigned since the start of the year. She explained this data is normally provided to her Ministry during the month of August.
Some 427 teachers have resigned within the public education system during the period January 2023 to September 2023. This was a marginal decline when compared to the same period the previous year, when 1,538 teachers resigned.
